Common House Fly: Ways to Prevent Garbage Flies Using IPM

Keep Filth Flies Out With Integrated Pest Management

Integrate Pest Management, or IPM, is gaining traction in pest management. It’s a common first line of defense, working to prevent an infestation from occurring. If you have a recurring issue with the common house fly, you can work to correct the problem using IPM strategies and methods.

IPM has countless benefits when used in pest control
. It works to provide economic, environmental, and health-related benefits for humans and animals alike. It also works in tandem with chemical solutions but should be applied before the use of pesticides.

If you suspect your house has a garbage fly infestation, you should contact a professional before these insects transmit harmful pathogens. These pathogens can lead to
food poisoning and dysentery, and should not be taken lightly. Consider the following IPM methods of filth fly prevention.

Where Do Filth Flies Breed?

It’s important to begin by monitoring the situation, looking to find house fly breeding locations. If you think that trash cans are the source of the issue, ensure that all dumpsters and garbage cans are at a reasonable distance from your home.

You’ll commonly find that filth flies, commonly known as house flies, lay eggs in animal feces and garbage, so always clean up after your pets when walking them outdoors.

Get Rid of Flies Inside

For indoor trash cans, always use plastic garbage bags to line the can, ensuring all trash is removed. You should also avoid throwing garbage directly into outdoor trash cans, but into a plastic bag instead. Additionally, close bags before throwing them out, as this can prevent house flies.

If you spill any food and/or drink, promptly and thoroughly clean up. Always keep food covered and in the refrigerator or pantry.

Additionally, be sure to install door sweeps and weather stripping to prevent the common house fly from infiltrating your home. Preventing flies from entering your house is the key to effective IPM.

Prevent Garbage Flies Outside

Look for any type of organic decaying matter. This could be fruit, vegetables, and fecal matter.

You could also plant rosemary, as it’s non-toxic to dogs and cats. Another idea is to light citronella candles when sitting outdoors. Always keep doors closed and cover food when eating in your yard.

Additionally, look for entry points. This might be holes in screens or cracks in your home’s exterior. A trained pest removal company can locate these entry points and seal them for you.

Additional Fly Prevention Checklist

Consider the following items as part of your fly prevention checklist. If you find that these preventative measures don’t rid of garbage flies from your house, contact a professional pest control specialist.

  • If you have any type of farm animals, always remove manure at least once a week
  • Dispose of manure and trash away from your property
  • Empty all garbage cans at least once a week, with twice being ideal
  • When possible, place exterior trash cans upwind from your home
  • Always keep your exterior drains cleaned, including your gutters
  • If you have leaky drains anywhere in your home, repair them as quickly as possible

Don’t forget that when you throw out recycling, you can attract filth flies. Before you recycle your items, always rinse them to deter flies from breeding.

These items may be the difference between an infestation and one or two flies buzzing around from time to time.

Prevent the Common House Fly

If you’re looking to prevent the common house fly, IPM methods can help. These methods may be used in tandem with chemical pesticides but can work to greatly reduce the incidence of filth flies in or around your home.
