Do You Need an Exterminator for Mice?

Nick Siebert • Jul 20, 2023

Here’s when you should call in the pros.

If you live in New Jersey, then you may have seen one of the seven common types of mice in the Garden State. While they may be cute to observe from afar, you don’t want them in your house.

For starters, mice (and rats) can chew through a variety of items in your house. This includes clothing, insulation, wood, wires, paper, and more. They pose a serious threat and can be a fire hazard. They can also cost you a tidy sum in home repairs.

The best way to avoid this damage is to get rid of mice in the first place. There are DIY methods you can try at home, which we’ll discuss in this article. However, it’s best to hire an exterminator. We’ll also cover when to stop Googling “exterminator for mice near me” and just call an
exterminator for mice instead

Mouse Proof Your House

For starters, begin by keeping counters food-free or covering any food that is left out. You should also put all food in sealed containers and store it in your pantry or refrigerator.

If you suspect you have a mouse in your house, you may be wondering about how to get rid of mice humanely. Although you can use a humane mouse trap that lures them in with some peanut butter or cheese, it’s not guaranteed you’ll catch them. Even if you do trap and release them, they may return (or new mice will).

This is the first sign you need to hire a pro — they can inspect your house from top to bottom and look for any entry points where mice might be entering, along with other critters.

You can try looking for any holes or gaps around your home. If you see any, seal them up. You can also have a pest control company seal up your attic vents to help prevent future unwanted pests.

As with other pests, keep all shrubbery that’s close to your home neatly trimmed. This works to deter them. When you take out the trash, ensure garbage can lids are on and sealed tightly.

If you have materials inside your home that mice can use to make nests (blankets, cotton, cardboard paper, or other fabrics) store them in plastic totes to prevent mice from accessing them. Check that the exterior of your home is also free from nesting materials, so always get rid of your
recycling at home as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, these preventative measures might not always work and you may still have a mouse infestation.

Signs You Need an Exterminator to Get Rid of Mice

If you see mouse droppings near sources of food, odds are you have a
mouse infestation and need to call in a professional pest removal company.

Another guaranteed sign of a mouse infestation is scratching sounds in your attic or walls. You may even hear it in your crawlspace.

If mice are in your walls, your wiring is exposed which means they can easily chew it, posing a severe safety issue. You might also see that they’ve chewed your baseboard moldings. Should you suspect a mouse infestation — especially if you see mouse droppings near food — call in an exterminator before they contaminate food sources.

Mice can carry a host of
dangerous diseases, including Bartonella, Salmonella, Leptospirosis, Plague, and Hantavirus.

When to Call an Exterminator for Mice

If you’ve tried to humanely get rid of mice but they continue to persist, you need an exterminator for mice. Mice carry harmful diseases that can jeopardize the health of you and your family, not to mention your pets. Mice can also cause significant damage, posing a fire hazard and costing you money in repairs.
